Flutter: One Codebase, All Platforms

Flutter: One Codebase, All Platforms

Flutter is a mobile application framework developed by Google, built to create high-performance apps that meet consumer expectations for iOS, Android, Web and Desktop. But Flutter's advantages do not stop there. Here are a few features that make Flutter unique:

1. Single Codebase

Flutter lets developers write apps for iOS, Android, Web and Desktop from a single codebase. This speeds up the development process and makes the work easier. It saves cost, too. If you are going to build for all four platforms, you can get the job done with a single developer.

A sample "Hello World" app:

import 'package:flutter/material.dart';
void main() {
  runApp(MyApp());
}
class MyApp extends StatelessWidget {
  @override
  Widget build(BuildContext context) {
    return MaterialApp(
      title: 'Hello World',
      home: Scaffold(
        appBar: AppBar(
          title: Text('Hello World'),
        ),
        body: Center(
          child: Text('Hello World!'),
        ),
      ),
    );
  }
}

2. Hot Reload

Flutter's "hot reload" feature lets developers see their changes instantly. That means bugs are found and fixed quickly, and the development process speeds up considerably.

class MyApp extends StatelessWidget {
  @override
  Widget build(BuildContext context) {
    return MaterialApp(
      title: 'Hot Reload Example',
      home: MyHomePage(),
    );
  }
}
class MyHomePage extends StatelessWidget {
  @override
  Widget build(BuildContext context) {
    return Scaffold(
      appBar: AppBar(
        title: Text("Hot Reload Example"),
      ),
      body: Center(
        child: Text("See your changes instantly!"),
      ),
    );
  }
}

Run this code and change the "See your changes instantly!" text. Thanks to Hot Reload you can see the change immediately without losing the app's state.

3. Performance

Flutter is written in Dart, and Dart has both Just-In-Time and Ahead-Of-Time compilation. These features speed up the app's start-up time and improve its performance.

4. Rich Widget Library

Flutter offers a set of widgets that let users build a modern and attractive interface. These widgets can be integrated into an app quickly and easily.

class MyApp extends StatelessWidget {
  @override
  Widget build(BuildContext context) {
    return MaterialApp(
      title: 'Rich Widgets',
      home: Scaffold(
        appBar: AppBar(
          title: Text('Rich Widgets'),
        ),
        body: Center(
          child: RaisedButton(
            onPressed: () {},
            child: Text('A Button Widget'),
          ),
        ),
      ),
    );
  }
}

This snippet gives the user an interactive element using a simple button widget.

With features like these, Flutter opens a new era in app development. A single codebase, hot reload, high performance and a rich widget library give developers the ability to build faster and more effective apps. On top of that, exporting to every platform saves us time. And it is not only time: with a single codebase you also get consistent quality. Duplicated code is reduced. Of course, your code still has to be good in a single-codebase setup. If you write your Flutter app badly, the result will be bad on every platform. That is why it is important to research properly before you start, study examples and take training if needed. One more thing worth mentioning: Flutter is a client development tool. If you are building something substantial, you will also need a solid backend. I will write a separate, detailed article about that.
